How to Care for Gold-Filled Jewelry & Natural Gemstones

Gold-filled jewelry is designed to be worn and enjoyed often. It offers the warm, elevated look of solid gold while being more approachable for everyday wear. With the right care, your favorite gold-filled necklaces, bracelets, and gemstone pieces can stay beautiful for years.
At TaliaJonelle, many of our pieces are handcrafted with natural gemstones and gold-filled details, so caring for your jewelry is also about caring for the unique materials that make each piece one of a kind.
The good news? Jewelry care does not have to be complicated.
A few simple habits can make a big difference.
What Is Gold-Filled Jewelry?
Gold-filled jewelry is made by bonding a substantial layer of real gold to a base metal using heat and pressure.
Unlike traditional gold-plated jewelry, which typically has a much thinner surface layer of gold, gold-filled jewelry is made to be more durable and better suited for frequent wear.
That does not mean it is completely maintenance-free, though.
Like any fine or handcrafted jewelry, gold-filled pieces can be affected over time by moisture, chemicals, oils, friction, and the way they are stored.
Giving your jewelry a little extra care can help preserve its shine and overall appearance.
Everyday Habits That Help Protect Your Jewelry
One of the easiest ways to care for your jewelry is simply to be mindful of when you put it on and take it off.
Put Your Jewelry On Last
Try to make jewelry the final step in your getting-ready routine.
Lotions, perfume, sunscreen, hairspray, makeup, and other beauty products can leave residue behind on metal and gemstones.
Allow your skincare and fragrance products to fully absorb before putting on your necklace or bracelet.
Remove Jewelry Before Swimming
Chlorine, salt water, and pool chemicals can be harsh on jewelry.
For that reason, we recommend removing your pieces before swimming in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or the ocean.
Even though gold-filled jewelry is durable, repeated exposure to chemicals and salt can dull the finish over time.
Take Jewelry Off Before Showering
Occasional contact with water is generally not something to panic about, but regularly showering in jewelry can expose it to soap, shampoo, conditioner, and mineral buildup.
Removing your jewelry beforehand helps keep it cleaner and brighter.
Remove Jewelry for Heavy Workouts
Sweat itself is not always the biggest concern, but heavy workouts create a combination of moisture, friction, body oils, and contact with gym equipment.
Removing delicate necklaces and bracelets before exercising can also help prevent stretching, snagging, or accidental damage.
Consider Removing Jewelry Before Bed
Sleeping in jewelry can create unnecessary pulling and friction, especially with delicate chains, extender chains, pendants, and gemstone strands.
Taking a moment to remove and store your jewelry before bed can help protect both the metal and the construction of the piece.
How to Clean Gold-Filled Jewelry
Regular gentle cleaning is usually all your jewelry needs.
After wearing your piece, lightly wipe it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. This helps remove natural body oils, sweat, and product residue before it has a chance to build up.
For a deeper clean, you can use:
Lukewarm water
A very small amount of mild soap
A soft cloth
A soft-bristled brush if needed for metal details
Gently clean the jewelry without aggressively scrubbing.
Rinse carefully and dry the piece completely before putting it away.
Leaving jewelry damp in an enclosed space can encourage tarnish or discoloration on certain metal components.
What to Avoid When Cleaning Gold-Filled Jewelry
Gentle care is always best.
Avoid using:
Harsh jewelry cleaners
Bleach
Alcohol-based cleaning solutions
Abrasive polishing cloths
Toothpaste
Baking soda
Rough brushes
Chemical dips
These products can be unnecessarily aggressive and may affect the appearance of the gold layer or damage delicate gemstones.
If your piece contains natural stones, it is especially important to avoid assuming that a cleaner that is safe for metal is also safe for the gemstone.
How to Care for Natural Gemstone Jewelry
Natural gemstones are one of the things that make TaliaJonelle pieces so special.
No two stones are exactly alike, and differences in color, texture, inclusions, pattern, and shape are part of their natural beauty.
Because gemstones have different hardness levels, mineral compositions, and sensitivities, there is no single cleaning method that is ideal for every stone.
When in doubt, simple is best.
Use a soft cloth, minimal water, and avoid prolonged soaking.
Some gemstones can be more porous or delicate than others and may react poorly to chemicals, heat, ultrasonic cleaners, or extended exposure to water.
Can Gemstone Jewelry Get Wet?
A brief splash is usually very different from soaking a piece for an extended period of time.
For everyday care, we recommend avoiding unnecessary water exposure whenever possible.
This is especially important for softer, porous, treated, or delicate stones.
Rather than regularly washing gemstone jewelry under running water, gently wiping it with a soft cloth is often the safest option.
Be Extra Gentle With Delicate Stones
Certain gemstones naturally require more care.
Stones such as opal, turquoise, selenite, pearls, and some softer minerals can be more sensitive to water, temperature changes, chemicals, or scratching.
If you are unsure how to care for a particular stone, always choose the gentlest method.
Avoid soaking and avoid chemical cleaners altogether.
Store Your Jewelry Properly
How you store your jewelry matters almost as much as how you clean it.
Whenever possible, store necklaces and bracelets separately.
This helps prevent:
Chains from tangling
Gemstones from scratching one another
Clasps from catching on delicate strands
Pendants from rubbing against beads
Pieces from becoming twisted or stretched
A jewelry box, soft pouch, or individual compartment works beautifully.
For necklaces, laying them flat or keeping them separated can help prevent knots in the chain.
Keep Jewelry Away From Humidity
Bathrooms may seem like a convenient place to store jewelry, but they tend to be humid.
Instead, keep your jewelry in a cool, dry place whenever possible.
Humidity, moisture, and environmental exposure can contribute to tarnish and buildup over time.
What If My Gold-Filled Jewelry Starts Looking Dull?
Sometimes jewelry simply needs to be cleaned.
Body oils, skincare products, dust, perfume, and everyday residue can create a film that makes gold-filled jewelry appear less bright.
Start by gently wiping the piece with a soft cloth.
If needed, use the mild soap and lukewarm water method described above, provided the gemstones in your piece can tolerate light moisture.
Dry the jewelry thoroughly and allow it to completely air dry before storing.
Handmade Jewelry Deserves a Little Extra Care
Handcrafted jewelry is different from mass-produced jewelry.
Each piece is assembled individually, often using delicate components, natural gemstone strands, wire, clasps, extender chains, pendants, and small details.
A little intentional care helps protect both the materials and the craftsmanship.
Try to avoid pulling on necklaces, stretching bracelets unnecessarily, or grabbing a piece directly by its pendant or extender chain when putting it on.
Instead, handle the jewelry by its main chain or strand whenever possible.
Natural Variation Is Part of the Beauty
Because we work with natural gemstones, your piece may include subtle variations in color, translucency, pattern, inclusions, or shape.
These details are not imperfections.
They are part of what makes natural stones so special.
Your gemstone jewelry is uniquely yours, and caring for it gently allows those natural details to remain part of the piece for years to come.
A Simple Jewelry Care Routine
If you want to keep things easy, remember these basics:
Put your jewelry on after beauty products.
Remove it before swimming, showering, and heavy workouts.
Wipe it gently after wearing.
Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
Keep gemstone pieces out of prolonged water exposure.
Store each piece separately in a dry place.
Handle delicate chains, clasps, and stones with care.
Complimentary Repair Service
Jewelry is meant to be worn, loved, and lived in, and sometimes everyday wear can lead to a clasp needing attention, a strand needing to be restrung, or another small repair.
For TaliaJonelle handcrafted pieces, we offer complimentary repair service for general wear and tear and craftsmanship-related issues whenever the piece can reasonably be repaired.
While the repair itself is complimentary, customers are responsible for the cost of shipping the piece back to TaliaJonelle. Once your jewelry arrives, we will carefully assess the piece and determine the best way to restore it.
Repairs may include things such as:
Reattaching or replacing a clasp
Repairing extender chains or connectors
Restringing gemstone necklaces or bracelets
Securing loose components
Addressing craftsmanship-related issues
Replacing small findings when possible
Because every TaliaJonelle piece is handcrafted and many feature natural gemstones, certain types of damage may require a little more consideration.
What If a Gemstone Breaks?
Natural gemstones can chip, crack, or break if dropped, struck against a hard surface, or exposed to significant pressure.
If a stone itself has broken, the piece may not be repairable in the same way as a damaged clasp or strand.
That does not mean we will leave you without options.
Please reach out so we can review the piece with you. Depending on the design, gemstone availability, and extent of the damage, we may be able to replace the stone, redesign part of the piece, or offer another solution.
Because natural gemstones vary from stone to stone, an exact replacement may not always be available.
How to Request a Repair
To begin a repair request, please email info@taliajonelle.com with:
Your name
Your order number, if available
A brief description of what happened
Clear photos of the piece and the area needing repair
From there, we will review the issue and communicate the next steps with you before you send your jewelry back.
Please do not ship a repair without contacting us first so we can make sure we have all the information needed to properly assist you.

Your TaliaJonelle experience is paramount to us, and we want you to feel just as good about the care you receive as you do about the jewelry itself.
